The direction we’re going in and that the commercial services are going in is that it will all wind up together on the Web.
Predictor: Ingle, Bob
Prediction, in context:In a 1995 article for the Albany Times-Union, Evan Ramstad interviews Knight- Ridder vice president, Bob Ingle. Ramstead writes:”Hoping to remove some of the uncertainties in electronic publishing, eight of the nation’s largest newspaper companies announced a venture Wednesday to help newspapers get on the Internet. New Century Network will provide consulting assistance andd software to newspapers that wish to create an electronic service to complement the printed page. It plans to help newspapers get advertising, track usage and bill people … In addition to Cox, the other participants are Advance Publications Inc.; Gannett Co. Inc.; Hearst Corp.; Knight-Ridder Inc.; Times-Mirror Co.; Tribune Co.; and The Washington Post Co. The founding companies own 185 daily newspapers … To keep up with technological advances, a few dozen newspapers have already developed online services through commercial services such as Prodigy, CompuServe or America Online. But the recent phenomenal growth of the World Wide Web, a portion of the Internet in which documents can easily be tied together and in which graphics and photos can be used efficiently, hasled to new thinking about how newspapers can best serve readers electronically. ‘The direction we’re going in and that the commercial services are going in is that it will all wind up together on the Web,’ said Bob Ingle, vice president of new media for Knight-Ridder and a board member of New Century Network.”
