Elon University
The prediction, in brief:

[The Internet] will crash and be the big joke of our day. It’s actually two users logging on 10 million times each. [Bill Gates] will lose more money in one day than anyone else in the history of the world.

Predictor: Bunnell, David

Prediction, in context:

In a 1994 article in the Seattle Times, writer Paul Andrews writes about what David Bunnell predicts in technology’s future at the MIT Enterprise forum. Andrews writes: ”The MIT Enterprise Forum all-star crystal-ball gazers were back in town. It’s been a year since a distinguished panel of national computer magazine editors kicked off the MIT series with an alacritous litany of technological predictions. Last night they revisited the scene of the crime at the Bellevue Hyatt Regency, forecasting newly outrageous trends for 1995 in a misguided attempt to atone for 1994’s howlers … Bunnell cast cold water on the Internet, calling the estimate of 20 million users ‘a lot of baloney.’ The Internet ‘will crash and be the big joke of our day,’ he said. ‘It’s actually two users logging on 10 million times each,’ [Windows Watcher editor Jesse] Berst countered. Bunnell said he is sticking by last year’s prediction that Microsoft would begin making movies in 1995. Microsoft’s billionaire chairman, Bill Gates, ‘will lose more money in one day than anyone else in the history of the world,’ Bunnell added. And Apple Computer will become the No. 1 seller of computers. ‘That was David Bunnell, direct from his home on planet Mars,’ Berst interjected.”
