In a 1993 article for Billboard, the music industry magazine, Catherine Applefeld reports on a National Information Infrastructure task force hearing Nov. 18 in Crystal City, Nevada, at which Hillary Rosen, executive vice president of the Recording Industry Association of America appeared. Applefeld writes: ”In an interview after the NII hearing, Rosen told Billboard, ‘The hearing identified the single biggest problem with this undertaking, and that is it is one of those elephants that looks like something different to everyone in the room.” She said there was clearly ‘tension’ between those testifying from the academic sector and those with a commercial interest, ‘but unless commercial opportunities exist, the NII will not get the funding it needs to succeed.'”
