It is possible with this technology, not just to provide courses, but to establish a “virtual university” with all the facilities necessary to make that a reality.
Predictor: Hiltz, Starr Roxanne
Prediction, in context:In a 1993 paper they presented at the Conference on Distance Education in DOD at the National Defense University, researchers Starr Roxanne Hiltz and Murray Turoff write:”There is no comparison with other modes of delivery of distance education in terms of the ability of CMC [computer-mediated communications] technology to allow students to work together in groups and to become a student body with respect to the program of study as a whole. Those of us who hold that this peer group reinforcement is very necessary to creating an outstanding educational process see no other cost-effective alternative to computer-based conferencing. It is possible with this technology, not just to provide courses, but to establish a ‘virtual university’ with all the facilities necessary to make that a reality.”
Biography:Starr Roxanne Hiltz, the co-author of a seminal book about the electronic frontier, “The Network Nation: Human Communication Via Computer” (MIT Press), was a professor of computer and information science at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and the author of many Internet research studies. In 1994, Hiltz received the “Pioneer Award” from the Electronic Frontier Foundation for her “significant and influential contributions to computer-based communications and to the empowerment of individuals using computers.” She was among the first to note that computer conferencing could form the basis of new kinds of communities.
