A vision for the future

Name: Rickard Englund

Bio: Web designer

Area of Expertise: Advocate/Voice of the People

Topic: Communication

Headline: High speeds and huge files

Nutshell: In ten years, we will need faster and better access to the Web. It will have to come.

Vision:

Today we need around 1M bit/second to not get mad when searching the net. Ten years ago we were happy if we had 56K bit/sec (56K = 0,056M). The reason that we today need higher speeds is that designers keep using bigger, higher-quality images when they make pages.

If this trend continues, you can imagine what will happen in ten years. Pages will grow larger in file size and will require even more speed to be downloaded and displayed on your computer.

Someone could also develop a way to squeeze large portions of digital information into a smaller file size, so they download faster.

We will also need higher access speeds when shopping. Today you can order nearly everything from the net, and you can buy and download items like movies and music to your computer. This trend will continue to grow, with more sophisticated files being downloaded.

I also believe that in a couple of years there will be less illegal stuff on the net. The security on the net is only getting better, and soon everybody will have very good firewalls, etc. so people can’t get into your computer.
