Hilaire Pickett ’08 Leadership Grants

Hilaire Pickett ’08 Leadership Grants will be awarded to two students involved with the Center for Leadership. Awards will be granted through an application process, overseen by the Director of the Center for Leadership. Grants will support students in their junior or senior years to pursue leadership internships or legacy efforts (rising juniors and seniors should apply). Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows are encouraged to apply. The students must demonstrate a significant commitment to their organization and academics, and be active in contributions that have had a positive impact on the Elon community. This should be evident by sustained and progressive involvement and exemplary involvement.

To Apply

Students must submit a grant proposal to the Director of the Center for Leadership by Friday, April 5th. The proposal should describe the project, explain its relevance to the student’s goals, make a compelling case for funding, and list any other funding sources sought. Applications should be encouraged to include one letter of support, one from an Elon faculty member or staff member with whom the student has discussed their project.

Proposals will be judged on the following factors:  creativity; originality; depth; and demonstration of positive and sustained impact on the organization, and the larger community.  Financial need is not a requirement but may be taken into consideration.  The students must be in good standing with the program and the university.

This is an endowed scholarship through an outright gift of the Pickett Family. A minimum $1,500 amount will be awarded to two rising juniors or seniors. The scholarship will be credited to the student’s account as tuition aid so that it is not taxable. A report of all expenses and a copy of receipts should be included in the grant report.

Interview

A brief virtual 15-minute interview will be conducted for selected applicants. Names will be recommended to the donor for review, and the selection committee will then make final recommendations to the Director of the Center for Leadership.

Previous Winners

The 2023 recipients of the Pickett Grant include Hanna Enngelhardt and Mason Mosley.

Hanna is studying Statistics, Peace and Conflict Studies, Women’s Gender, and Sexualities Studies, and Leadership Studies. Active in our campus community, Hanna serves as the Chapter Events Director for Alpha Xi Delta and is a Research Assistant for Elon’s Department of Anthropology and Sociology. She is also a member of the Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows program where she served in leadership on the Cannon Committee and is a Peer Mentor for First Year Fellows.  The Hilaire Pickett grant will support Hanna’s continued faculty-mentored research and interest in pursuing a compelling new interdisciplinary program for Elon University. This interest sparked from Hanna’s study abroad program in South India this past January, where she had the privilege of exploring the complexities of contemporary Indian society, including topics such as gender, religion, and caste. Her fieldwork grew an understanding of contemporary political perspectives around religious diversity and nationalism in India and how that applies to the study of intelligence, homeland security, and defense development. Aspiring to work in the Intelligence Community and act in the field as a global citizen, Hanna hopes to work alongside Faculty mentors to explore an academic minor that centers around Intelligence and Security Studies through an anthropologist’s lens,  focusing on disciplines in language, culture, religion, political anthropology, social movements, and political protest.

Mason is studying Finance and Leadership Studies. His leadership involves serving as a volunteer for Elon’s It Takes a Village Project,  a tutor and mentor for the Positive Attitude Youth Center, a member of the Elon University President’s Roundtable, a member of the Elon Underrepresented Business Student Alliance Network, a member of the Nu Theta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated, and an Associate Member of the Beta Alpha Psi International Business Honor Society. Mason is also a member of the Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellows program where he served as a Peer Mentor for First Year Fellows and a Fellows Weekend Ambassador. The Hilaire Pickett grant will support Mason’s continued endeavors to engage in experiential learning through internships. Mason most recently completed an internship with Morgan Stanley’s Global Sports and Entertainment Division. This summer, Mason will embark upon a new experience with UBS, the world’s largest wealth manager as a Global Wealth Management Summer Analyst. Through these experiences, Mason is engaging in opportunities to build his professional network and sharpen his skills before entering the workforce. ` His internship experiences have allowed Mason to put his education and classroom experiences into practice, to further develop his leadership skills.
