Driver Application & Training
In order for students to be eligible to operate University vehicles, a University Motor Vehicle Drivers Training Course must be completed. The course consists of an online application, Moodle course, and road test. An online driver’s application must be submitted and approved before drivers can take the training course. Once your application has been approved, you will receive an email from the Risk Management Office, with the website for the Moodle course . Once you complete the Moodle course with a passing score of at least 80, you will receive an email from Program Assistant for Moseley Campus Center, listing the dates and times for the road test. Once the driver successfully completes the entire Motor Vehicles Drivers Training Course they will be added to the University’s approved drivers list.
To qualify for the course, students must be at least 19 years of age, have had three years of driving experience and maintain a safe driving record. Faculty and staff are not required to complete the course only if they are driving university motor vehicles designed for fewer than 7 passengers. However, if they are operating a motor vehicle that holds more than seven passengers then they must also complete the Motor Vehicle Drivers Training Course.
Driver Application
As part of our risk management program, Elon requires any faculty, staff or student who will be driving any university vehicle to register with the Office of the Assistant Vice President for Administrative Services. Persons registering must fill out an application. The list is periodically checked by the Department of Motor Vehicle Records for drivers who are at high risk.
The Online Application can be found on the Finance & Administration website (https://www.elon.edu/u/fa/)
Faculty, staff, or students wishing to drive a university van must take the van drivers training class and pass the written and driving test. Sessions are held several times per semester.
Please note that only drivers who meet the underwriting standards of the University’s insurance company will be approved to drive University vehicles. Guidelines developed by our insurance company as part of our risk management program are used to determine driver eligibility. For questions regarding those guidelines please contact Administrative Services at (336) 278-5003.
