Reception – The Landscape: Works on Canvas and Paper

This exhibit of regional artists’ works, which was curated by Joseph Rowand of Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, explores the media and technical prowess of the landscape. On exhibit August 11 through September 10.

Nice Girls Don’t Sweat

Nice Girls Don’t Sweat is a one-person performance, which uses slides, tapes and humor, to explore the history of women in sports and popular stereotypes of these athletes. Join Jane Curry as she portrays an English teacher and veteran of the All-American Red Heads professional basketball team.

Morris Dees, “Teaching Tolerance”

Dees is co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit group, which specializes in lawsuits involving civil rights violations and racially motivated crimes. As the center’s chief trial counsel he has successfully sued the Ku Klux Klan.

The Jon Metzger Quartet, “Teach Me Tonight”

Admission: $10 or free with Elon identification

Jon Metzger, a world-renown jazz vibraphonist and Elon College music instructor, will perform jazz standards with his quartet from their newly released CD, “Teach Me Tonight.” The CD was produced by Elon ImproVibes, a class of 25 Martha and Spencer Love School of Business students and their professors Barth Strempek and Ken Paul.

Gita Mehta, reading

7:30 p.m., McCrary Theatre, Faith Rockefeller Model Center for the Arts

Author of Snakes and Ladders, this year’s common reading, Mehta has also written Karma Cola, Raj and A River Sutra. Her books have been translated into 13 languages and published in 27 countries.

Voices of Discovery Science Speakers Series

Cox is director of the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Author of Nafanua: Saving the Samoan Rainforest, he shared the 1997 Goldman Environmental Prize for his struggle to preserve South Pacific rain forests and culture. He was featured as a “Hero of Medicine” by Time magazine in fall 1997.

Aquila Theatre Company of London presents The Odyssey

This new production of Odysseus’ journey features original live music and creative staging. The London-based Aquila Theatre Company is a foremost producer of touring classic theater.

Opening Reception: Drawings and Maquettes by Jim Gallucci

This exhibition, which is on exhibit through October 29, features drawings and maquettes for a series of “gates” by Greensboro sculptor Jim Gallucci whose works are displayed in the Faith Rockefeller Model Center’s Ward Gallery.

American Repertory Ballet’s adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are
7 p.m., McCrary Theatre, Faith Rockefeller Model Center for the Arts

Admission: $12 or free with Elon identification (reserved seating)

Author and illustrator Maurice Sendak and American Repertory’s artistic director Septime Webre have created a ballet adaptation of the children’s classic, Where the Wild Things Are, which features stunning sets and costumes and 10-foot-tall Wild Things inhabited by dancers. The performance will include a 45-minute journey with Max and two additional short pieces.
