ELON COLLEGE, N.C. – Ann Hankinson, a math teacher at Riverview High School in Sarasota, Fla., was honored as a “Hometown Hero” at Elon College. She was nominated by Megann Haase, a freshman at Elon.
Haase wrote in her nominating letter that Hankinson is an educator who is very involved in her community. She considers Hankinson a mentor and friend. “I have been given an opportunity to learn from a teacher, not only Calculus skills, but skills that will help me in my everyday life.”
Hankinson said she is grateful for the honor and said it has inspired her to go home and continue to help others. She insists she is no one special. “I feel like I’m just an ordinary person, an ordinary teacher,” she said.
The Hometown Heroes program recognizes those who have made a difference in their community. Individuals are nominated by freshman, and finalists are selected by class officers.
