Local resident gets recognition at Elon College

ELON COLLEGE, N.C. – Lee Boyd of Lynchburg, Va., who has served his community in many ways, was honored as a “Hometown Hero” at Elon College. He was nominated by his daughter, Janel Boyd, a freshman at Elon.

In her nominating letter, Janel wrote that her father has inspired her and many others through community service, including volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. “My dad has not only inspired people in our community to become more self-motivated, but he has touched a strong-willed, determined teen-ager, his own daughter.”

As he accepted his honor, Boyd expressed excitement over the opportunity to talk about the ability that everyone has to make a difference. “All meaningful and lasting change starts with just one person,” he said.

The Hometown Heroes program recognizes those who have made a difference in their community. Individuals are nominated by freshmen, and the finalists are selected by class officers.
