Watts Prophets to perform March 9 at Elon College

ELON COLLEGE – The Watts Prophets, a group that speaks out against racism and other social problems, will perform Tuesday, March 9 in McCrary Theatre in the Faith Rockefeller Model Center for the Arts on the campus of Elon College.

Tickets are $10 or free with Elon identification. Tickets may be purchased in the Box Office from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. For more information, call the Box Office at (336) 584-2199.

In 1967, three young men from Los Angeles wrote anti-racism poetry for the Watts Writers Workshop. They performed the poetry with the accompaniment of a jazz band. Their work has been called West Coast rap because they set poems to music.

Today, the Prophets continue to speak out against racism, but they also include other social topics such as ecology and conflicts between social classes and different generations.
