ELON COLLEGE – A history professor at Elon College is trying to do her part to help preserve a pre-Civil War schoolhouse near the college’s north campus.
Carole Troxler, professor of history at Elon, is enlisting the support of students in the Teaching Fellows program as well as members of Phi Alpha Theta, the history honor society, to help clean up the area around the school, which is shrouded in vines and overgrowth vegetation. The cleanup is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 17.
The schoolhouse, which is owned by Wilson Cable, a resident of the Town of Elon College, is located near the college’s athletic track.
“I have a copy of the school’s deed which is dated 1847,” said Troxler, who is just completing a book on the history of Alamance County. “There were 40 of these publicly funded schools in the state before the Civil War. These were the first generation of public schools.”
Troxler said the school, which is known as Cable School, remained open until 1910. In recent years it has been for storage.
