ELON COLLEGE – Freshmen enrolling for the fall semester at Elon College have the strongest academic credentials in the college’s history.
About 975 freshmen are expected to move in Friday, Aug. 27 and begin classes Sept. 1.
The average SAT score for freshmen is 1105, which is 25 points higher than last year’s class and 105 points higher than the national average. The average SAT score of Elon students has risen 75 points since 1989.
More than 50 percent of the enrolling freshmen were in the top quartile of their high school classes. Eleven were valedictorians of their high schools.
“I think our reputation and scholarship/fellows program are attracting more academically prepared students,” said Nan Perkins, vice president of enrollment management.
“When students come here for the first time they are impressed by our faculty, academic and student life programs.”
The college is attracting more students from North Carolina – about 24 percent, which is up three percent from last year. Freshmen also are coming from 31 other states, mainly those on the Eastern Seaboard.
The top ten majors that students indicated they will pursue are business, journalism/communications, education, sports medicine, psychology, pre-medicine, biology, computer science, theatre and history.
