ELON COLLEGE – Brett Williams, a senior broadcast/corporate communications major at Elon College, was awarded the Dick Clark Fellowship during the Radio-Mercury Awards ceremony this summer. He is the son of Paul and Kendra Williams of Sanford, Maine.
Williams was selected from among 24 college juniors and seniors who were participating in an internship program sponsored by the International Radio and Television Society Foundation. The foundation, which received more than 600 applications for its 1999 internship program, offers students with a strong interest in electronic media an opportunity to work in communications at major corporations based in New York City.
In New York, Williams worked for Grey Advertising, doing work behind and front of the camera. “I got to cast the screen test for an upcoming Downy campaign,” he said. “The internship helped me narrow what field I want to go into after graduation. Rather than producing or directing, I want to work in advertising or public relations.”
Though Williams did not get to meet Clark, who is known for his American Bandstand television show, as well as his New Year’s Eve telecast, the two have exchanged letters.
At Elon, Williams works for Elon Student Television and the admissions department. He also has worked summers at two news-talk radio stations in Maine.
