ELON COLLEGE – At its fall meeting, the Elon College Board of Trustees reviewed a 32-page plan for enhancing technology on the campus.
The plan, which was developed over the past seven months, seeks to have the college recognized a national leader in technology-enhanced learning.
“There are two reasons for this plan,” said Chris Fulkerson, associate library director and chair of the subcommittee that prepared the report. “One, our students need to be prepared to work and live in a world that is ever changing. Technology is so persuasive, you need it to compete successfully in a 21st century work environment. Secondly, technology extends the options that faculty have to interact with students and allows them to take advantage of powerful new teaching tools.”
The plan concentrates on three areas: enhancing the teaching, learning and research of faculty, students and staff; preparing students for a life and career in a rapidly evolving age of technology; and improving efficiency and effectiveness of communications and operations.
The plan offers several specific recommendations, including additional staff, the establishment of a technology center, efficient access to information and support, development of college-wide technology objectives and ways for students to meet them, and infusion of technology into the curriculum.
The report also recommends that the college complete efforts to wire all student residential buildings and provide students with a CD with basic software.
