Elon College professor co-authors book on human sexuality

ELON COLLEGE – Anne Bolin, associate professor of sociology at Elon College, says a book that she recently co-authored offers different perspectives on human sexuality currently unavailable in other college textbooks.

She co-authored the book, “Perspectives on Human Sexuality,” with Patricia Whelehan, a professor of anthropology and the campus AIDS education coordinator at the State University of New York at Potsdam. The 503-page book was published by the State University of New York Press.

“It is an interdisciplinary textbook that looks at biological and cultural influences on human sexuality,” Bolin said. “We also offer an anthropological perspective to understanding human sexuality, how it developed over millions of years and how it is embedded in specific socio-cultural contexts.”

The authors present unique perspectives on modern human male and female anatomy and physiology; pregnancy and childbirth as a bio-cultural experience; various topics in adult sexuality; sexual orientations, behaviors, and lifestyles; and a discussion of HIV and AIDS.

Bolin is the author of “In Search of Eve: Transsexual Rites of Passages” and currently is editor of “The Journal of Sex Research.”
