Film director and activist to speak Nov. 10 at Elon College

ELON COLLEGE – Barbara Trent, the producer and director of an Academy Award-winning film, will speak on the economics of censorship Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Whitley Auditorium on the campus of Elon College. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Trent will outline why she believes the news, including television documentaries, reflects a monolithic perspective, illuminating why the free press of this country presents no real threat to the present arrangement of power and wealth.

Trent is the producer and director of “The Panama Deception,” which won the 1993 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film. The film reveals the untold story of the 1989 invasion of Panama by the United States. She has also produced several other controversial and award-winning films.

Trent is the co-founder of the Empowerment Project, a media resource center that serves filmmakers and videographers. The project produces films and videos to initiate social and media reform.
