Elon College students win major awards at Model UN competition

ELON COLLEGE – Three members of The Elon Model United Nations team recently won major awards at the 27th annual National Collegiate Security Conference sponsored by the Georgetown international Relations Association.

Benita Appiah-Pinkrah, daughter of Lucy Dempreh of Lanham, Md., won an award in the UNESCO committee for outstanding delegate. Richard Keene, son of Martin and Kathleen Keene of Hinesburg, Vt., and Rebecca Harris, daughter of Michelle Harris of Matthews won speaking awards in the First Committee on Disarmament and International Security.

Some of the best colleges and universities in the United States and Canada were represented at this conference, including the University of Pennsylvania, American, Brown, Cornell, Florida State, George Washington, Princeton, Rutgers and Johns Hopkins universities.

During the Georgetown conference, students simulate real international organizations. Important and controversial global issues are discussed and students attempt to reach consensus and draft resolutions on these issues.
Each college or university that attended the conference was assigned particular countries. Elon’s team was assigned two countries – Indonesia and Sierra Leone. The students were responsible for researching the policies of each country on a number of different issues and for representing the countries in the committee meetings. Students also were given a seat on the International Court of Justice.

The Elon team will be attending the national conference in New York in April.
