ELON COLLEGE, N.C. – Elon College will hold a community open house at the new Carol Grotnes Belk Library, 3:30 – 6:30 p.m., Friday, March 24. The event is free and open to the public.
Library staff members will give informal tours of the $14 million facility and will be on hand to answer questions. Refreshments will be served.
The three-story Belk Library features the latest in information technology, including 148 computers and many other technology resources. There is seating for 563 library patrons and shelf capacity for 177,000 books and periodicals. The center of the building features a dramatic three-story atrium, which floods the interior with natural light.
The first floor includes the circulation desk, banks of computers, the reference section, group study rooms, a state-of-the-art computer lab, a faculty technology resource center, the tutoring and writing center, offices and reading lounges. The second and third floors contain book stacks and movable shelving, special collections, group study rooms, the periodicals reading room, a media production room, reading lounges, offices and a computer lab.
The library, which opened Feb. 1, is named in honor of Carol Grotnes Belk of Charalotte, N.C. She and her husband, Irwin Belk, a Charlotte businessman and philanthropist, are long-time supporters of the college.
