ELON COLLEGE – Elon College’s education program earned high marks in the Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) report issued April 6 by the North Carolina State Board of Education.
The IHE report evaluated teacher education programs at North Carolina’s 46 public and private colleges and universities. This report, required by the Excellent Schools Act, is the first time that data has been used to rate colleges and universities for their effectiveness in preparing classroom teachers for work in North Carolina schools. A variety of information, including graduate and employer surveys, test scores of prospective teachers and teacher education graduates and the percentage of graduates employed, was collected about each teacher education program to rate performance.
Each institution’s teacher education program was rated according to three overall criteria: compliance with state and national accreditation standards, the quality of program graduates, and involvement with and service to public schools. In future years, these scores will be used to determine programs that will receive rewards or sanctions.
Elon’s scores placed the education program in the top third of programs in the state, with the highest marks in meeting state accreditation guidelines. Elon offers a master’s in education as well as a bachelor’s degree with majors in elementary education, middle grades education, special education, secondary education and special subject areas including French, health education, music education, physical education and Spanish.
