Elon College to host prestigious Woodrow Wilson Postdoctoral Fellowship in Humanities

ELON COLLEGE – President Leo M. Lambert has announced that Elon College has been selected to host a two-year Woodrow Wilson Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities beginning in fall 2001.

Elon is one of 14 institutions selected by The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation to offer the fellowship. Other host institutions include Harvard University, New York University, Northwestern University, Rutgers University, Smith College, University of Minnesota, University of Redlands, University of Virginia, University of Texas (Austin), University of Washington and Vassar College.

The fellowships are designed to provide distinguished recent Ph.D. recipients with opportunities to gain valuable teaching experience by working in exciting academic environments in addition to time and resources for scholarly research and study.

Elon’s strong emphasis on interdisciplinary and experiential learning and international education is one of the key factors in the institution’s selection to host a Woodrow Wilson Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Elon will offer the postdoctoral fellow the opportunity to help design and lead an international study course and teach in both the General Studies program and in the fellow’s field of specialization. Russell Gill, Maude Sharpe Powell Professor of English, will serve as Elon faculty liaison to the Woodrow Wilson fellowship holder.

The Woodrow Wilson Postdoctoral Fellowships serve many important purposes, including helping to jumpstart the careers of recent Ph.D’s, identify future leaders in the humanities and strengthen the teaching skills of young scholar-teachers in a rich interdisciplinary environment.

“By providing additional positions for new Ph.D’s in the humanities, these fellowships encourage the best graduates to remain in academia at a time of a difficult job market,” says Judith L. Pinch, vice president of The Woodrow Wilson Foundation.

The foundation will subsidize the salaries of each fellow at $10,000 a year for each of the two years. Elon and the foundation will announce the selection of the institution’s postdoctoral fellow in March 2001.
