ELON COLLEGE, N.C. – On Monday, July 31, Elon College will switch to a new telephone number system, changing nearly every phone number on campus. Most current numbers will continue to function for a six-month period as the college makes the transition to the new system.
The new campus main switchboard number will be (336) 278-2000, and the switchboard operator, as well as Bell South directory assistance will have the complete new Elon directory to help callers during the transition period.
Elon remains in the 336 area code. The change consolidates the three existing prefixes (584, 538 and 586) into a unified system under the 278 prefix. All existing extension numbers, including fax and modem lines will also change. The only numbers that will be unaffected are the college toll-free numbers and numbers assigned to college-owned cell phones.
The main advantage of the new system is to eliminate confusion caused by having three prefixes. Callers who knew the extension but guessed the wrong prefix would end up calling numbers off-campus. The new system will also increase the number of extension numbers available at the college from 2,637 to 6,000. About half of the available numbers have been assigned and the remaining numbers will accommodate the growing demand for telephone lines.
Numbers for some frequently-called campus offices include the following:

To dial off-campus, on-campus users will have to dial 8. The previous off-campus access number, 9, sometimes led to mistaken calls to the 911 emergency number. To access voice mail, users should simply dial in their new extension number and existing password.
A temporary faculty/staff directory has been distributed on-campus prior and a permanent directory will be published in early October. College employees are asked to inform callers of their new extension numbers prior to and during the transition period. Other phone number changes should be made to:
E-mail signature files (at the end of e-mail)
Business cards (College Relations will notify the campus on procedures)
Publications
Speed call and auto dial lists
Fax machines (programming)
Modems
Personal or work-related web pages
