ELON COLLEGE, NC – Gloria Steinem, the devoted feminist writer and activist who married for the first time Sept. 3, will visit the Elon College campus on Wednesday, Sept. 13, for a series of events.
Steinem will deliver a lecture titled “Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions,” at 7:30 p.m. in McCrary Theatre, located in the Faith Rockefeller Model Center for the Arts. Sponsored by the Liberal Arts Forum, the lecture is free and open to the public.
Earlier in the day, Steinem will meet with Elon students enrolled in a course titled “The Psychology of Sex and Gender.”
Perhaps best known as the co-founder, editor and owner of Ms. Magazine, Steinem is one of the most important voices of the modern feminist movement. She established the Ms. Foundation for Women, devoted to helping women and girls in issues related to economic security, leadership, and health and safety. She convened the historic 1971 Women’s Political Caucus, founded the Coalition of Labor Union Women and is president of Voters for Choice.
For many years, Steinem dismissed marriage as an institution that destroys relationships, and said that her own chances of marrying were slim. But at age 66, Steinem married South African-born entrepreneur David Bale in a sunrise ceremony in Stilwell, Okla. In an Associated Press account of her marriage, Steinem said, “Though I’ve worked many years to make marriage more equal, I never expected to take advantage of it myself. I’m happy, surprised, and one day will write about it, but for now, I hope this proves what feminists have always said—that feminism is about the ability to choose what’s right at each time of our lives.”
