Michael G. Magoon has been promoted to assistant vice president of institutional advancement and director of major gifts at Elon. In his new role, Magoon will be responsible for all major gift fundraising and will supervise the departments of development research, major gifts and planned giving. Nan Perkins, vice president for institutional advancement, praised Magoon’s accomplishments in making the announcement.
“Mike’s work with the Campaign for the Elon Vision has been exemplary,” says Perkins. “His commitment to this project was a major factor in the campaign’s success, and his knowledge, experience and leadership are vital assets to Elon as he assumes this new role.”
Magoon joined the Elon staff in November 1995 as director of the Campaign for the Elon Vision. The successful five-year campaign raised more than $46.7 million, exceeding its original goal of $40 million.
The Elon Vision addressed four main components: academics, students, faculty and staff, and resources. Premier academic programs have been developed, including the addition of the College of Arts and Sciences and Schools of Education and Communications. The $13.5 million Dalton L. McMichael, Sr. Science Center and the $14 million Carol Grotnes Belk Library have been completed, and Rhodes Stadium, an on-campus athletics facility, will open this fall.
Before coming to Elon, Magoon was director of the annual fund and major gifts officer at Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio. He also worked in the annual fund office at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.
Magoon earned a bachelor’s degree from Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, N.Y., and a master’s degree from Alfred University, Alfred, N.Y.
