Elon will honor Malvin Artley, Evelyn Campbell and Martha Gant with Elon Medallions during a ceremony at 8:45 a.m., Monday, Aug. 20 in McCrary Theatre, located in the Faith Rockefeller Model Center for the Arts. The medallion is given to individuals who have rendered outstanding service to the university and are distinguished by the unusual length and quality of their service.
Artley has been associated with the music department at Elon for 36 years. He joined the department in 1965 as associate professor of music and was promoted to professor in 1969. He founded the Elon College Orchestra and served as its first conductor, served as president of the National School Orchestra Association and was state president of the American String Teachers Association. A noted violinist, Artley has introduced hundreds of local youth to music through his work as a private instructor and assistance to the Burlington City Schools. He retired in 1986, but continues to teach as an adjunct faculty member. Artley and his wife, Jeannie, have four children.
Campbell served as executive secretary in the president’s office from 1979 until her retirement in 1994. Noted for her personal warmth and genuine interest in others, her extraordinary secretarial skills and efficiency made her an invaluable asset to the president’s office and the board of trustees. She and her husband, Jack, have two daughters.
Gant, known affectionately as “Miss Martha,” was a custodian from 1967 until her retirement in 1999. Her outstanding work ethic, combined with her caring and modest disposition, won her friends throughout campus. She was named Elon’s Environmental Services Employee of the Month in August 1991 and was honored as the Physical Plant Staff Person of the Year in 1995-1996. Widowed as a young woman, she found employment at Elon so she could raise her seven children on her own.
