Ten Elon freshmen have been chosen as this year’s recipients of a Watson Scholarship, awarded annually to North Carolina students at the university with a record of strong academic achievement and high financial need.
The recipients are listed along with their hometown and high school:

- Crystal Honeycutt, Pittsboro, New Century Charter High School
- Ashanti Jennings, Mebane, Orange High School
- Keisha King, Pelham, N.C. School of Science and Mathematics
- Meredith Moose, Conover, Bunker Hill High School
- Brian Newell, Ocracoke, Cape Hatteras High School
- Michelle Parson, Salisbury, Salisbury High School
- Laura Thiedemann, Sanford, Lee County Senior High School
- Samantha Walters, Gibsonville, Western Alamance High School
Watson Scholarship recipients receive a total financial aid package, which may include state and federal funds, ranging from a minimum of $10,000 annually up to the full cost of tuition, fees, room and board. Students also receive $3,000 to fund a study abroad experience.
The Leon and Lorraine Watson Scholarship Program was endowed in 1999 by the estate of Leon “Doc” Watson, a 1925 graduate, and his wife, Lorraine. Their $3 million bequest is the largest gift designated for scholarships in the school’s history.
