Julia Butterfly Hill to speak at Elon, Nov. 1

Julia Butterfly Hill, who lived in a 1,000-year-old California redwood tree for two years in an effort to save the forests from logging interests, will speak at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 1 in Whitley Auditorium, located on the Elon campus. Sponsored by the Liberal Arts Forum, Hill’s speech is free and open to the public.

In 1997, Hill climbed 180 feet to a platform in the tree. She lived in the tree, which she named Luna, until she negotiated with the Pacific Lumber Company for permanent protection for the tree.

Hill is the founder of the Circle of Life Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes development of a sustainable culture that honors biological and cultural diversity. She is the author of “The Legacy of Luna: The Story of a Tree, A Woman and the Struggle to Save the Redwoods.”
