Elon named one of nation’s “320 Most Interesting Colleges”

Kaplan, Inc., a leading publisher and education services provider, has named Elon University one of the “320 Most Interesting Colleges.” The listing is published in the 2003 edition of “The Unofficial, Unbiased Insider’s Guide to the 320 Most Interesting Colleges.” Elon is also named one of 30 “Hidden Treasure” universities.

In creating its lists, Kaplan conducted a scientific survey of high school guidance counselors across the nation, asking them to recommend schools and describe the strengths and weaknesses of the colleges they know best. The “Most Interesting” colleges are defined as highly selective schools with unique programs and academic strength.

A two-page profile of Elon praises the university’s engaging style of teaching and learning. “All schools require students to acquire knowledge,” writes author Trent Anderson. “Elon University, through its focus on experiential education, makes students live it.”

The profile notes Elon students’ high participation in internships, volunteer service, study abroad and research programs. “Facilities at the McMichael Science Center and Belk Library contain sophisticated equipment that isn’t ordinarily found in undergraduate schools, and students use it all.”

Other North Carolina schools selected for the listing include Davidson College, Duke University, Guilford College, North Carolina School of the Arts, North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Wake Forest University and Warren Wilson College. Elon is the only North Carolina school chosen for the “Hidden Treasure” listing.
