Noted author David Halberstam to give January 16 speech at Elon

Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Halberstam will discuss his 2001 best selling book, “War In a Time of Peace: Bush, Clinton, and the Generals,” during a speech at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 16 in McCrary Theatre, located in the Faith Rockefeller Model Center for the Arts on the Elon University campus.

Halberstam’s speech is part of the Baird Pulitzer Prize Lecture series, which brings some of the nation’s most accomplished writers and journalists to campus. “War in a Time of Peace” describes the effects of domestic politics on post-Cold War U.S. foreign policy, including U.S. military actions in the Persian Gulf and the Balkans.

Halberstam gained national attention and later won a Pulitzer Prize for his insightful and controversial coverage of the Vietnam War as a New York Times correspondent in the 1960s. He later worked for the Times as a correspondent in the Congo and in Warsaw, Poland.

His last 13 books have made The New York Times bestseller list, including his trilogy on power in America, “The Best and the Brightest,” “The Powers That Be” and “The Reckoning.” He captured the essence of the 1950s in his critically acclaimed book, “The Fifties,” which was later made into a 10-part series by the History Channel. He has also written extensively on sports, with several sports books and a bi-weekly ESPN.com column to his credit. His latest bestseller, “Firehouse” tells the story of Ladder Company 36 in Manhattan, which lost 12 of its 13 firefighters in the attacks on the World Trade Center.

Tickets for Halberstam’s speech are $10 or free with valid Elon identification. Tickets go on sale Dec. 30 in the Model Center box office. The box office is open from 12:30 p.m.-5 p.m., Monday – Friday, and can be reached by phone at (336) 278-5610.
