Rock music journalist to discuss censorship February 11

Noted rock music journalist Tim Riley will discuss censorship during a presentation titled “Find the Cost of Freedom: Censorship ‘n’ Rock and Roll” at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11 in Whitley Auditorium on the Elon University campus.

Riley is the author of “Tell Me Why: A Beatles Commentary,” “Hard Rain: A Dylan Commentary” and “Madonna: Illustrated,” and has been a contributor to the Washington Post, National Public Radio and other national media outlets. His books provide interesting glimpses into artists’ careers through analysis of artifacts, performances and recordings.

Riley has also worked for music-related Web sites, including the Lycos-VH1 joint music guide venture, the Link. He is also a noted pianist and often makes musical appearances. His speech will discuss the continuing censorship debate, referencing pop culture, campus speech codes, Hollywood violence, and the file-sharing copyright battle.

Riley’s speech, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Liberal Arts Forum.
