Recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984, Desmond Tutu was ordained to the Anglican priesthood in 1961. As General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches, Bishop Tutu became an international figure and spiritual leader voicing the ideals and aspirations of millions of South African Christians. Since receiving the Nobel Peace prize, Tutu has worked to bridge the chasm between black and white South Africans as Bishop of Johannesburg and later, as Archbishop of Cape Town.
