The Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi is proud to announce the acceptance of Sophomore Zachary Lauritzen as a cyclist on the 2003 Journey Of Hope. Zachary is the fourth brother to be accepted for this year’s ride. Joining Zachary will be Juniors Brian O’Shea, Bryan Scherich, and Jon Williams. Epsilon Alpha has consistently sent brothers on the Journey Of Hope since colonizing at Elon in the spring of 2000. These four bring the total to nine brothers.
The Journey of Hope is a cross-country bicycle trek beginning in San Francisco, Calif. and ending in Washington, D.C. that raises funds and awareness for people with disabilities. Simply put, the Journey of Hope is a ride with a purpose. Make no mistake; this is not a simple ride. The Journey of Hope is about many things. It is about challenging the norm. It is about serving our communities. It is about finding out more about ourselves than we ever imagined. It is about having a dream. It is about a mission. It is about hope.
In 1987, one man’s dream of riding his bike across the country was transformed in 1988 into the largest fraternal fund-raising and awareness event of its kind. Today the Journey of Hope reaches over 50 million yearly through media and community events, bringing to the forefront the abilities of people with disabilities. From the inaugural team of 21 team members raising $20,000 the team has grown up into two teams of 35 Pi Kappa Phi’s raising over $350,000. To date, 798 undergraduates have participated in the Journey of Hope.
Each brother is currently fundraising and training in preparation for the June 15th start at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
