Ten students, faculty and staff gathered in the Multicultural Center to reflect on Tutu’s message. Professor Lamar Bland of the English department, who has traveled in Tutu’s home country of South Africa, facilitated the discussion and talked about his experiences. He reviewed events in South African history and how they have shaped today’s society. He also talked about the role of President Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison prior to his 1994 election.

Tutu’s message of nonviolence was also discussed, and Bland contrasted Tutu’s philosophy with that of the African National Congress.
