Broughton Coburn’s illustrated lecture is an unusual travelogue beginning in a Himalayan farming village where Coburn was taken in as Aama’s adopted son and immersed in the philosophy of a woman with no exposure to Western civilization. In 1992, Aama turned 84, a year marked by a ritual that relieves the elderly from further worldly duty—the time for a pilgrimage. Thus, Aama departed on a 12,000 mile odyssey to the U.S., a thought-provoking journey told through the voice of Coburn, who worked for more than 30 years in the Himalayas developing documentaries and overseeing environmental conservation efforts.
