Victoria Fischer, professor of music, will receive the Southeast Region Artist Award from Phi Kappa Phi national honor society during an Aug. 8 meeting in Charleston, S.C. Fischer was chosen for the award from a field of nominees representing six states and Puerto Rico. She will receive a monetary award, an active-for-life membership in Phi Kappa Phi and a framed certificate.
Winners are chosen based on the quality of their accomplishments in their field of arts; achievements of a national or international scope; and the number and nature of honors and other forms of recognition for artistic work.
Fischer teaches and mentors students in piano and has played key roles in Elon’s music and general studies programs. She teaches an introductory fine arts course and helped develop a required interdisciplinary freshman seminar, The Global Experience. She also gives private lessons to piano students.
She is a frequent performer at concerts on campus and has studied the works of Hungarian composer and pianist Bela Bartok. Fischer received a grant from the International Research Exchange that allowed her to study at the Bartok Archive in Budapest. Fischer has edited or contributed to several publications, including “The Cambridge Companion to Bartok.” She was also the featured artist on the 2002 recording “Evening in the Country: Folk Influence in the Piano Works of Bela Bartok.”
Fischer is a charter member of the Elon chapter of Phi Kappa Phi and began a three-year term as chapter president in 2001. Phi Kappa Phi recognizes and promotes academic excellence in all fields of higher education and scholarship. Annually, the honor society awards more than $500,000 in scholarships to its members.
