Laurence Basirico, professor of sociology, was a guest on the July 3 edition of NPR's "Talk of the Nation" hosted by Lynn Neary. He discussed his new book dealing with the complexities of family reunions. Details....
The hour-long NPR program was carried nationwide from 3 to 4 p.m. Basirico responded to callers’ questions and gave insights from his book, titled “The Family Reunion Survival Guide: How to avoid problems with your family without avoiding your family.”
Basirico recommends ways to avoid conflict and make everyone feel accepted at a family reunion. “Creating activities that give everyone the opportunity to share important events in their lives, identifying and discussing family and cultural differences and establishing rules for the reunion before the gathering begins are all ways to promote harmony,” he says.
