Chief Chuck Gantos and his staff opened their offices in Jordan Center Thursday morning to the campus community. Visitors had a chance to tour the offices, get a glimpse of evidence seized during the past year, learn about standard law enforcement procedures and even sit behind the wheel of a patrol car.
Department officers are responsible for the enforcement of North Carolina laws as well as university rules and regulations. The department also coordinates campus parking and responds to fire alarms and medical emergencies.
Officers also utilize bike patrols to ensure a safe environment, logging 785 hours during the 2002-03 academic year. In addition, campus officers provide a night escort service to any student or staff member walking to their car or between campus locations.
Campus Safety also operates a shuttle and tram service for students and staff. More than 73,000 riders took advantage of the service during 2002-03.
