Charity Johansson, associate professor of physical therapy, earned recertification as a geriatric clinical specialist from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Johansson was one of only 12 professionals in the United States to be recertified in geriatrics.
To be eligible for recertification, candidates must hold a current certificate from ABPTS and a current license to practice physical therapy. Candidates are required to demonstrate continued excellence in clinical practice and professional development.
Johansson was originally certified in 1994 and her recertification is valid through 2014. Geriatric specialists treat health conditions more prevalent in the elderly and help patients with the normal changes associated with advanced aging.
