The 114th academic year at Elon University will start with a new student convocation at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 23, Under the Oaks in front of West Dormitory. The first day of classes is Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Fifty-seven percent of this year’s projected 1,220 freshmen graduated in the top quarter of their high school classes. The average SAT score of entering Elon freshmen has increased every year since 1993. This year’s average score is 1160, 15 points higher than last year, and the average GPA is 3.6.

Students entering as Fellows, which recognize excellence in honors, science, business, leadership, journalism/communications and teaching, make up 15 percent of the freshman class and have an average SAT of 1265. Presidential Scholars make up slightly more than 34 percent of the class, with an average SAT score of 1254 and an average high school GPA of 4.2.

Members of the freshman class come from 38 states. Twenty-eight percent of the class comes from North Carolina, while 12 percent is from Maryland. Ten percent comes from Virginia and nine percent is from New England states. Six percent each is from New Jersey and Florida, and five percent each is from Georgia, Pennsylvania and Ohio. New international students, who begin orientation Wednesday, Aug. 20, represent 10 countries.

This year’s total projected enrollment of 4,525, including graduate students, is about 100 more than last year.

Top intended majors of incoming students are business, communications, education, biology, psychology, exercise sport science, political science, English and history.
