Ernie Lunsford has co-authored a textbook titled En Otras Palabras (In Other Words), designed for advanced-level students of Spanish. The textbook uses translation to help students focus on form in order to sharpen their skills in Spanish. Each chapter contains texts in Spanish to be translated to English, and texts in English to be translated to Spanish. The first half of the book deals with specific problem areas of Spanish grammar, such as the subjunctive, and the second half of the book deals with language for specific professions, such as medicine, business and advertising. The book was published in August by Georgetown University Press.
Along with his co-author, Patricia V. Lunn of Michigan State University, Lunsford presented a half-day workshop at the annual meeting of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese titled “En Otras Palabras/In Other Words: Using Translation to Focus on Form”, using materials from the textbook, in Chicago, Illinois, on August 1.
