Metzger chosen for ASCAP Plus Award

Jon Metzger, assistant professor of music, has received the ASCAP Plus Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers for his work in 2002. This is the second straight year Metzger has received the award.

An awards panel reviewed Metzger’s work and achievements in several categories, including compositions, recordings, performances, prizes, commissions and honors.

Metzger’s accomplishments during the previous year included his new commissioned composition for jazz quintet and percussion ensemble, titled “Zoroastrian Thunder.” The three-movement piece was recorded for Metzger’s third CD for the Elon Improvibes label and was accepted for publication by C. Alan Publications in June. The piece is scheduled for additional performances at the University of Central Arkansas, the University of South Florida and at the North Carolina Day of Percussion at Lenoir-Rhyne College, where Metzger will be a featured artist and clinician.

The panel also cited Metzger’s performances of his compositions at the East Coast Jazz Festival in Rockville, Md.; the National Percussion Pedagogy Conference at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro; and the North Carolina School of the Arts. He also gave a program featuring his composition works at the Temple Theatre in Sanford, N.C.
