A new scholarship at Elon University will recognize students from Alamance County who demonstrate superior academic achievement and a commitment to service and leadership.
The Alamance Award will be awarded each year to two members of the freshman class, beginning in fall 2004. The award, among the highest merit scholarship awards at Elon, will go to high school seniors who graduate from the Alamance-Burlington School System, or from any independent, state-accredited secondary school in Alamance County. Much of the funding for these scholarships has been made possible by gifts from residents of Alamance County.
Each recipient will receive $5,000 annually for tuition, and a one-time $750 study abroad grant that can be used anytime during the their Elon career. Scholarships are renewable annually based on academic performance, citizenship and full-time enrollment at Elon.
Freshman applicants from Alamance County will automatically be considered for the Alamance Award. Selected applicants, typically among the top 25 percent of Elon applicants, will be invited to make a presentation to a selection committee about their academic, civic and leadership activities.
The Alamance Award may be received in addition to any other merit- or performance-based grant or scholarship. Recipients may also receive any need-based aid for which they qualify.
