All members of the Elon community are invited to attend dedication ceremonies for Belk Track, White Field and "Phoenix Rising," a new bronze sculpture at the entrance to the North Athletics complex, beginning at 12:45 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 20. Details...
Festivities will begin at Belk Track and White Field, adjacent to Rhodes Stadium, at 12:45 p.m. The first ceremony will recognize the generous contributions of Irwin Belk, a Charlotte, N.C., businessman and philanthropist, who provided major funding for the track; and Jerry and Jeanne Robertson of Burlington, N.C., whose major gift named the field at the track in honor of Athletics Director Alan White and his wife, Norma.
At 1:10 p.m., dedication ceremonies will be held for “Phoenix Rising,” a 19-foot bronze sculpture depicting the legendary Phoenix rising from flames which engulf a globe-shaped egg. The sculpture was mounted Aug. 1 on a brick pedestal at the intersection of Bank of America Drive and Phoenix Drive. Cornelius, N.C., artist Jon Hair created the statue, and he will be honored along with Irwin Belk, who funded the creation of “Phoenix Rising.”
Donors to both projects and special guests will also be recognized at 1:40 p.m., during pregame ceremonies on the 50-yard line at McKinnon Field/Rhodes Stadium.
