Class project wins student spot in USA Today

A letter to the editor by Melissa Melito was printed in the Oct. 2 edition of USA Today. The letter was written as part of a class project for the Critical Thinking course, taught by philosophy professor Nim Batchelor. The letter, titled “Consider child’s best interest,” is a reaction to a USA Today story on unmarried parents of children. Melito believes that many adults seem to put their wishes ahead of their children’s well-being, and she maintains that the unmarried-parent setting is not in the child’s best interest.

Batchelor requires students to write letters to the editors of newspapers in order to develop critical thinking skills on complex issues. He says this is the first of his students’ letters to be printed in a national newspaper.
