The Kernodle Center’s home in Moseley 230 was renovated during the summer, expanding office space and work areas for the more than 50 students who work there each day.

Lindsay Reed, student coordinator of Elon Volunteers!, said the renovated space inspires her to find new avenues of service for students each day. “Students at Elon care about service and helping others,” Reed said.

Smith Jackson, vice president and dean of student life, welcomed members of the Kernodle family, including John Kernodle III, a current Elon student, and his mother Lynn Kernodle. John Kernodle, Jr. was focused on solving pressing social needs in Greensboro, N.C., until his death in 1995.

“The impact of the Kernodle family on service learning, both among Elon students and the larger community, will continue to flourish because of this center,” Jackson said. “This center allows students to do even better work in their service projects and it allows us to extend service in new ways. We thank the Kernodle family for teaching the lesson of deeds over words.”

Since the Kernodle Center was dedicated in 1997, Elon students have performed more than 330,000 hours of service with 45 local agencies. More than 2,600 students take part in service learning opportunities each year.
