Cool temperatures made it feel like a perfect football Saturday as alumni met for the Alumni Association gathering in Whitley Auditorium and tailgating at various locatons across campus before the Phoenix football team hosted Appalachian State University at Rhodes Stadium.
The morning started with a breakfast hosted by Chaplain Richard McBride. At a mid-morning Alumni Association gathering in Whitley Auditorium, alums heard a campus update from President Leo M. Lambert and honored several of their own with the presentation of the annual Alumni Association Awards. Click here to read about this year’s award recipients.
Temperatures in the mid-50s made the day perfect for enjoying a tailgate lunch with friends and former classmates. On The Green, beside Lake Mary Nell and in parking lots around campus, alumni gathered to enjoy a pre-game meal of chicken, barbecue, burgers and just about every other kind of food imaginable. Members of the 1951 Appalachian State football team, who missed their postgame campus meal at Elon that year due to a kitchen fire, enjoyed a special lunch hosted by President Lambert. Elon’s football game against ASU also provided the backdrop for a special reunion of marching band alumni. More than 20 band alumni brought their instruments and played with Elon’s new marching band, “The Fire of the Carolinas. Halftime ceremonies included the presentation of the Homecoming Court and the crowning of Zachary Lauritzen as Homecoming king and Cara Catalfumo as Homecoming queen. Although Elon led Appalachian State 12-7 early in Saturday’s game, the Moutaineers came back to grab a 28-12 halftime lead en route to a 34-12 victory against the Phoenix.
Homecoming fun continued Saturday evening with a volleyball match against Appalachian State in Alumni Gym, a presentation of the hit musical “Anything Goes” in McCrary Theatre and the Alumni Gala party in Moseley Center. Activities concluded on Sunday with a worship service at the Elon Community Church, and a matinee performance of “Anything Goes.”
