Awarded the Congressional Medal of Achievement in 1985 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986, Wiesel was deported to Auschwitz in 1944. Upon arrival, he was separated from his sister and mother whom he never saw again, and in the last months of the war, his father died. It took ten years before Wiesel recounted his experiences in LaNuit (Night) . In 1978, he was appointed by President Jimmy Carter as Chairman of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council.
