The Elon University Wind Ensemble will host its 15th annual family concert at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 10 in McCrary Theatre, located in the Center for the Arts on campus. The show is free and open to the public.
Directors Tom Erdmann and Tony Sawyer will lead a program featuring Symphony No. 4 by Alan Hovhaness, the son of Armenian and Scottish immigrants. Hovhaness composed his first piece of music at age 4, and his professional compositions utilized elements of Indian ragas, Japanese gugaku music and natural sounds. His 1970 composition, “And God Created Great Whales,” was composed for a full orchestra and included the recorded song of a humpback whale.
The program will also feature “Asmodeus” by James Sochinski and “I’ve Made My Plans for the Summer,” by John Philip Sousa, featuring music faculty member Hallie Coppedge-Hogan as a solo vocalist.
