The Southern Conference announced its TIAA-CREF Academic All-Conference teams for the winter 2003-04 on Thursday, March 11. A total of 102 student-athletes, representing all 12 Southern Conference institutions were named to the team.
Elon’s representatives are Jane Bartley, Jessica Burgeson, Alana Black, Jessica Hayden and Lindsay Gonzalez.
Bartley (Olney, Md./Sherwood HS) is a junior member of the women’s basketball team. She is a Exercise Sports Science major with a 3.32 grade point average. Bartley saw action in 16 games this season for the Phoenix.
A senior, Burgeson (Burlington, N.C./Southern Alamance) boasts a 3.78 grade point average as a Exercise Sports Science major. She broke the school record in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.10 during the indoor track season.
Black (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) is a sophomore English major with a 3.24 grade point average. During the indoor track season she set new school records in the 3000 meter run (11:33.49), the mile (5:15.54) and the 800 meter run (2:20.92).
Hayden (Roanoke, Va./William Fleming), a junior Exercise Sports Science major has a 3.21 grade point average. She was part of the 4X400 meter relay team that set a new school record with a time of 4:07.88. This season, she notched a season-best 27.66 in the 200 meter run and 65.00 in the 400 meter run.
A sophomore, Gonzalez (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) has earned a 3.4 grade point average as an Exercise Sports Science major. She tallied a season-best time of 65.17 in the 400 meter run along with distance of 4.45 meter in the long jump.
The 102 student-athletes averaged a 3.537 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and have competed in at least one-half of their team’s competitions during the winter.
Elon has named 42 student-athletes to the All-Academic team this year after honoring 37 this fall.
This is the second year that the Southern Conference has named an All-Academic Team by season. The All-Academic teams are made possible by a grant from the Southern Conference’s Education Partner, TIAA-CREF.
