Paula Cardwell and Linda Poulson will present a draft of their paper titled “The Sarbanes-Oxley Characteristics of Independence for Audit Committees in a Financially Stressed Industry: A Small Sample Study,” at 2:45 p.m., Friday, March 12 in Long 201. The presentation is part of the Love School of Business Discussion Paper Series.
This paper examines required independence characteristics of audit committees under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 for textile-related firms. The findings support that severely stressed companies that have filed for bankruptcy are not strongly related to these characteristics of audit committee independence. The results suggest that actual independence for audit committees may differ from the appearance of independence as defined by Sarbanes-Oxley and may be limited to certain companies and industries.
Light refreshments will be served following the presentation. Everyone is invited to attend.
